Miele Refrigerator F3: Refrigerant System Sensor Fault

F3 means a temperature sensor monitoring the refrigeration system is reporting values outside its specified range. The control board relies on that sensor to modulate the inverter compressor — so when the reading turns implausible, the board flags F3 and falls back to a conservative cooling strategy. The fridge often feels “mostly fine” meanwhile, which is exactly why F3 gets ignored until it grows into something bigger.

What’s actually behind it

In order of how often we find it on MasterCool and built-in units across Sacramento:

  1. The sensor itself — NTC thermistors drift or go open-circuit with age; an out-of-range reading is the classic signature.
  2. Wiring and connectors — on built-in columns the harness routes through tight cabinet channels and door hinges; a chafed wire produces intermittent F3 that comes and goes with door movement.
  3. The control board’s input channel — the sensor is fine, the board misreads it.
  4. A genuine sealed-system problem — occasionally F3 is the messenger: an abnormal system temperature (low charge, weak compressor) pushes a healthy sensor past its expected range.

Can you do anything yourself?

Very little — and that’s fine. What genuinely helps is observing before you call: note whether one compartment or both are affected, whether any frost pattern shows on the rear wall, and whether F3 is constant or intermittent. That, plus a photo of the display texted to us, measurably shortens the diagnostic visit.

What doesn’t help: repeated power-cycling. Each reset clears the code but not the cause, and it erases the fault context a technician would otherwise read from the log. On site we measure sensor resistance against Miele’s spec at two known temperatures and cross-check live data in service software — that separates a sensor job from a board or wiring job in one visit. FAQ

F3 but the fridge feels cold — ignore it?

No. “Feels cold” is the fallback strategy working, not the fault being gone. A drifting sensor costs efficiency first and temperature control later — and if F3 is reporting a real sealed-system problem, waiting is the expensive option.

Can a power outage cause F3?

Occasionally — SMUD outages and brownouts can corrupt a sensor reading or stress a board input. One restart after an outage is reasonable. If F3 returns, it wasn’t the outage.

Is F3 covered under warranty?

Within the warranty period, sensor and board faults typically are — but coverage requires repair by a Miele Factory Authorized Service Center, which is what we are (BEAR #49373).
