Miele Refrigerator F21 / F22: Ice Maker Water & Harvest Faults
F21 is the ice maker’s water supply; F22 is its harvest cycle. F21 means the inlet valve feeding the ice maker misbehaves — wrong solenoid reading or no confirmed flow. F22 means the tray filled but the harvest motor can’t finish a cycle: cubes don’t eject, the ejector stalls, or the unit times out. Both leave the bin empty, but the repair paths are completely different — which is why we test instead of swap.
What’s actually behind it
In frequency order from our Sacramento and Roseville-area calls:
- A frozen fill tube (F21) — the small tube feeding the tray freezes shut; panel-ready doors hide it for months.
- The inlet valve solenoid (F21) — coil resistance drifts out of spec with age; measured in seconds, replaced in under an hour.
- Supply problems (F21) — a filter past its 6-month life or a half-closed shutoff valve starving the line (Miele spec: 30–120 PSI at the valve).
- The ice maker unit itself (F22) — harvest motor or internal thermostat worn; on integrated units this is a Miele OEM assembly, not a generic part.
- Door-hinge wiring (either) — on column units the harness flexes thousands of times a year; an intermittent break mimics both codes.
Can you do anything yourself?
Three safe checks: replace or bypass an overdue water filter; confirm the shutoff valve on the supply line is fully open; and peek into the fill tube above the ice maker for visible ice — a hair dryer on low, kept moving, clears a mild freeze-up. Then one power cycle and 24 hours of patience: a healthy ice maker drops a first batch within a few hours.

FAQ
Water dispenses fine but there’s no ice — F21?
Very likely. The door dispenser and the ice maker use separate valves on most MasterCool configurations — one can be perfect while the other is dead. It actually helps the diagnosis: it rules out household supply pressure.
Cubes are small, hollow or misshapen.
That’s underfilling — a starving inlet valve, a clogged filter or low pressure. Early-F21 territory; caught now, it’s usually the cheap version of this repair.
The ice maker stopped right after a filter change.
Common: an unseated filter or an air-locked line. Reseat the filter, run the dispenser for two minutes to purge air, give it a day. No ice after that — call us.
