Pyrolysis Temperature Not Reached
F23 appears on Miele H 7000 series ovens when a pyrolysis (self-clean) cycle fails to reach the target temperature of approximately 500°C (932°F) within the expected time window. The oven aborts the cycle, may display F23, and often leaves the door locked with residual heat and odor inside. This is a post-warranty common failure — we see it most often on ovens 4–8 years old.

How Pyrolysis Works (and Why F23 Happens)
Miele pyrolysis uses all heating elements (top, bottom, and ring heater) simultaneously to reach 500°C, incinerating food residue to ash. The control board monitors:
- Cavity temperature via NTC sensor
- Door lock status — must be confirmed locked before pyrolysis begins
- Heater element resistance — each element is monitored for proper current draw

1. Weakened Heating Elements (Most Common)
Miele H 7000 ovens use three independent heating elements. Over years of thermal cycling, element resistance increases and wattage output drops. Individually, each element still works for normal baking. But pyrolysis requires all three at maximum simultaneously. If any element is down 15–20% from spec, the combined output cannot reach 500°C in time.

2. Door Seal Heat Damage
The door seal on pyrolysis ovens is a high-temp silicone gasket rated for 500°C+. After 4–7 years of thermal cycling, the seal hardens, compresses, or develops gaps. During pyrolysis, hot air leaks past the seal, reducing cavity temperature and triggering F23. A damaged seal also risks heat damage to surrounding cabinetry — a serious fire hazard.
3. NTC Sensor Drift
The cavity temperature sensor can drift high or low over time. If it reads lower than actual temperature, the board thinks the oven isn't heating fast enough and aborts with F23. We test sensor accuracy against a calibrated thermometer at 100°C, 200°C, and 300°C.
What the Repair Involves
- Full diagnostic — element resistance, current draw, NTC accuracy, door seal compression test, control board relay test
- Component replacement — replace failed element(s), door seal, or sensor with genuine Miele OEM parts. Note: Miele specifies replacing all three elements if one has significantly degraded, because the others are likely close to failure.
- Door seal inspection and replacement — check for heat damage, measure compression, replace if outside tolerance
- Calibration test — run a supervised pyrolysis cycle (reduced duration) and monitor temperature curve via Miele Service Assistant to verify the repair
