Airflow Restricted (Heat-Pump Dryer)

F66 on a Miele T1 heat-pump dryer means the control system has detected insufficient airflow through the drying circuit. Unlike conventional dryers that simply vent hot air outside, Miele T1 dryers use a closed-loop heat-pump system: air is heated, passed through the clothes, cooled in an evaporator to extract moisture, reheated, and recirculated. If airflow drops below the threshold at any point in this loop, the thermal protection system logs F66 and shuts down the heater to prevent damage.

Why Heat-Pump Dryers Are Different

Generic appliance technicians often treat F66 like a "clogged vent" issue on a conventional dryer. This is wrong. Miele T1 dryers have no external vent (in most installations). The airflow restriction is internal:

Owner Maintenance (Do These First)

  1. Clean the primary lint filter — after every load. Remove the filter, rinse under warm water, let dry completely before reinstalling. Miele's filter has a fine mesh that traps more lint than standard dryers.
  2. Clean the evaporator filter — open the lower front panel (press the release clips). Remove the foam/pleated filter. Rinse thoroughly and dry. This filter protects the heat-pump evaporator — if it's clogged, F66 is guaranteed.
  3. Check the condenser access panel — on some T1 models, there's a secondary access panel for condenser cleaning. Vacuum gently with a brush attachment. Do not bend the aluminum fins.
  4. Verify room ventilation — T1 dryers need adequate air exchange in the room. If the laundry room is a small closet with no vent, the dryer's own heat increases ambient temperature, reducing efficiency and triggering F66.

  • Do not use compressed air on the condenser fins — it pushes lint deeper into the coil
  • Do not run the dryer with F66 cleared but not fixed — thermal cycling damages the heat-pump compressor
  • Do not ignore the "Clean out airways" maintenance message — it appears before F66 as a warning

What the Service Repair Involves

For persistent F66 or cases where owner cleaning does not resolve:

  1. Full disassembly — remove top, rear, and side panels to access the heat-pump module
  2. Evaporator deep cleaning — apply foaming cleaner to evaporator fins, let dwell, rinse with low-pressure water, dry with compressed air (from the correct direction)
  3. Blower wheel removal and cleaning — remove lint accumulation from the squirrel-cage blower. This is the #1 missed cause of F66 in dusty environments.
  4. Airflow sensor test — verify the sensor reads within Miele specification using Miele Service Assistant
  5. Reassembly and test cycle — run a timed dry cycle and monitor evaporator temperature, airflow rate, and heater cycling
